Sandwich is a common food in west countries. It is usually made by two pieces of bread with some meat, vegetables and cheese between the two bread slices. What’s more, there is an interesting story about the origin of the sandwich.
Sandwich was an unknown town in southeast England. The town had one earl named John Montagu. He was a man who loved to play cards very much. He indulged in card games all day so that he had neglected food and sleep. In order to make it convenient for him to have meals, his servants put some dishes, eggs and sausage between two pieces of bread and let him play cards while eating.
Unexpectedly Montagu was very happy to see this kind of food, just calling it a “sandwich”. When he was hungry, he began to cry out: “Serve a sandwich!” Other gamblers also rushed to imitate him. They all had eaten a sandwich while played cards. Soon sandwich spread throughout the British Isles, and spread to Europe and then spread to the United States.
